Davis & White - Ice Champions Live Videos

Meryl Davis and Charlie White performed in Michael Weiss's Ice Champions Live show this weekend, and my friend Debbie attended and took a couple of video clips for us! The first is the opening of Meryl and Charlie's new show program to "Dog Days Are Over," and the second is Charlie participating in a fun spread eagle contest with Brian Boitano and Michael Buckley.

Unforgettable Moments of Love Show

I've never visited Las Vegas, so when I heard there would be a Disson skating show with Meryl Davis & Charlie White AND Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto in Vegas, I knew I had to go! I was even more excited when I heard O.A.R. would be the live band because they are a current rock band with great songs (unlike most of the live musical acts Disson books).

The show was one of the best Disson specials I've seen. The cast was a good mix of longtime pro veterans and recent competitors on the Olympic scene. The highlight for me was seeing Meryl, Charlie, Tanith, and Ben skate a quartet program. I've always wanted to see them swap partners, and their program to Sam Smith's "Lay Me Down" didn't disappoint!

Stars on Ice

The Stars on Ice tour didn't come anywhere close to my city, so I took the easy two-hour flight to Chicago to see the show on May 3. It was so worth the trip! My friends and I got passes to the pre-show (thank you again, Hailey at IMG!!), so we arrived at the Allstate Arena around 4:00. A small line had already formed, and some of the little skater girls were freaking because they'd seen Charlie White in the parking lot.

About thirty minutes later, they let us into the arena, where some of the show's stars were on the ice warming up - Ryan Bradley, Josh Farris, Gracie Gold, Mirai Nagasu, Ashley Wagner, and Alissa Czisny. General pop music played except for a couple of skaters' program music. Not everyone practiced with their music. They all lightly warmed up and did a few jumps. Josh was trying the quad toe, but he didn't land any cleanly when I was watching. I spotted Gracie's twin sister in the audience.

During the ice resurface, Tanith and her and Charlie's dog DJ came out from backstage to watch the next group warm up. The next group included Meryl Davis and Charlie White, Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre, Jason Brown (who received lots of screams from the local skater girls), Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir, and Jeremy Abbott. Meryl and Charlie spent more time chatting with friends and family (and playing with DJ) than they did on the ice. Kim and Brent warmed up a bunch of their lifts and their headbanger. Marissa was practicing her double Axel and Salchow quite a bit. Jason's coach Kori Ade was there with her cutie pie baby daughter, and some of the skaters were playing with her rinkside.

Mirai came back onto the ice and was attempting throw Salchows with Simon. They got up to a double and looked great! We were hoping Jason would show us his throw triple Salchow with Simon, but it didn't happen.

We had an hour break before the show to grab food, and then the lights dimmed for showtime! The opening was beautiful and dramatic with Meryl and Charlie under a spotlight of snow. The cast regulars all participated in the opening to Hans Zimmer's "When You Are Not Saving the World," carrying large white flags. Meryl and Charlie spoke to the crowd for a few minutes to welcome us, and Meryl said we definitely sounded ready for the show!

First onto the ice was Jason Brown, and he thrilled his hometown with a modified version of his Riverdance long program. He nailed all his jumps and reminded me again how much I loved that program. After Jason, Ryan Bradley kept the energy up with his rock medley. I've been watching Ryan skate since he was a teenager at nationals, so it was neat to see him as a pro in Stars on Ice.

Alissa Czisny's Liszt program was gorgeous and exhibited all the most wonderful aspects of her skating. She did a double Axel, I think, but she's a skater that doesn't need to jump at all. Kim Navarro and Brent Bommentre followed with a high-energy program to "How Do You Like Me Now." They looked so free and easy in their skating, and I could tell they've been performing a lot the past few years. They've become seasoned pros.

Gracie was effervescent in her "All That Jazz" number (with a cameo by Ryan Bradley). She was followed by Jeremy Abbott, who skated to "The Fear." He popped one of his jumps, but he's another skater who doesn't need to jump because his skating is about so much more than that.

Mirai Nagasu's "On Golden Pond" program was just as lovely as it was at nationals but without the tears that had made it heart-wrenching to watch. She had one little slip where she went down onto the ice and looked like she was going to do a push-up.

Meryl and Charlie's Rachmaninoff program lived up to all my expectations of seeing it live. I'd wanted them to skate to this music for years, so it was a dream to see the program. They looked so at peace and so in touch with the music and each other. Charlie was especially glowing with happiness.

Ashley Wagner brought the sass in her "Sweet Dreams" program. Girl knows how to project to the top of the arena and then some. Closing out the first act were all the guys in their group number to "The Walker." This was one of the highlights of the show for me. Josh Farris was too cute as the excitable guy who just wanted to keep dancing after the program was over. My attention went to him and Charlie for most of the number.

Act II began with the girls' group number to "Creep." I loved it just as much as the guys' number. It had a very So You Think You Can Dance contemporary feel, and my eyes went to Meryl in this one. She looked so fierce and exquisite, and I loved the part where she was hanging onto the underside of the barre.

Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir did their awesome "Royals" program that I'd seen at nationals. They rocked it out again and had the crowd gasping with their headbanger.

Kim and Brent's second number to "Another Story" was more romantic, and I was very impressed with their lifts, especially the one where Kim was in a Charlotte position while Brent supported her. Alissa followed with a sultry program to "My Kind of Love," showing her range of performance. 

Ryan's second program to "Wake Me Up" was just as fun as his first. He splatted on a jump but made a great comeback with a triple toe after that. His signature back flip was so close to the edge of the ice that we thought he was going to flip into the audience.

Alissa and Jeremy's duet to "Piano Guys" was super cute and whimsical. They looked very comfortable playing off each other. Next was Mirai, and her "Demons" program was so heartfelt. I'd love to see her put that same kind of emotional intensity into her competitive programs. 

I'd been looking forward to seeing Josh's solo to "To Build a Home" since no one had posted any videos online, and it didn't disappoint. He takes so much care with each step. Not a finger is out of place. My favorite moment was his Ina Bauer that stretched across the rink. Absolutely gorgeous.

Josh and Jason slapped hands as Jason took the ice next. He got the crowd revved up with his "U Can't Touch This" program, which is always a winner. It's impossible not to smile when he's out there on the ice!

Ashley skated her "Young and Beautiful" program with a ton of power and beauty. Jeremy's second program to "Latch" was one of my favorites. It was like watching a modern dance show on ice. His ease of movement and body control are so special.

Gracie skated to "Let It Go" from Frozen before Meryl and Charlie came out for their second number, the revamped Scheherazade. It was wonderful to see their Samson and Delilah swoopy lift again and the dizzying Schez ending that has "Olympic gold" written all over it.

The finale to "Don't Stop Believin'" was a lot of fun. After all the skaters finished in a perfect line, "Happy" came on and they danced and did a couple of goodbye laps for the crowd. Meryl and Jeremy were so cute dancing together at center ice.

After the show my friends and I went to the Meet and Greet, and it was such a great event. The crowd was relaxed, and the skaters chatted with us at length. We went to Meryl and Charlie first since we knew they'd have a long line, and I gave them big hugs to congratulate them on their Olympic win. I've been so lucky to have visited with them at so many events the past seven years, and this was the longest I'd been able to talk to them. They are true superstars inside and out :)

We headed for Josh's line next, and I chatted with him about some songs he'd love to use for his short program if he ends up using music with lyrics. He's pretty much the definition of adorable.

Marissa and Simon were next on our list, and it's always great to talk to them. They've had such a crazy schedule but are finally winding down with their last show tonight. They said it was great to see some familiar faces :)

Jeremy and Ryan were hanging out together, so we talked to them next. They both wore some darn good-smelling cologne, so we went back later and asked Jeremy the name of his. He was very flattered and said it's Wonderwood by Commes des Garcons. So there's your tidbit of the event ;)

Ryan was as nice as I always remembered him being at nationals and Skate Americas past. He used to have us cracking up at practices back in the day.

Next we visited Jason, and he was hugging every single person who came up to him. He is truly the happiest person on the planet! I told him I hoped we'd see him at Skate America in Chicago later this year, and he crossed his fingers that he'd be there.

We talked to Mirai about the group numbers, and she confirmed Jeff Buttle had choreographed them. I told her I loved both! Alissa, Ashley, and Gracie looked a little tired (which was totally understandable!), but they were super gracious to everyone. It was great to see Kim and Brent again because I used to talk to them back when they were competing, and I always run into them at nationals now that they attend as commentators and spectators.

We were some of the last people to leave, and we told the Stars on Ice rep how amazing the experience was. From start to finish the entire event was awesome!

2014 Olympics - Meet the U.S. Ice Dancers

Today begins the ice dance event in Sochi - an event that I have been anxiously awaiting for four years. Let's meet all three teams that will be representing the U.S.!

Meryl Davis and Charlie White

Meryl Davis and Charlie White train in Canton, Michigan and have been skating together for seventeen years. They are six-time national champions (the most ever national titles by a U.S. ice dance team), two-time world champions, and the 2010 Olympic silver medalists. They have brought American ice dance to all new heights, and throughout all their success, they remain two of the most genuine, down-to-earth people around. So many of their programs I've loved, but if I had to choose one to feature... well, I can only narrow it down to two! The first is their Samson and Delilah free dance from the 2008-2009 season. It was the program that made the world take notice of them, and when they performed it at the world championships in L.A. and the building was shaking around me, I knew it was a moment we'd talk about years later.

My other favorite program of theirs is their Notre Dame de Paris free dance from 2012-2013 season. This was another program I was lucky enough to see live at the world championships in London, Ontario, and it was another moment I'll never forget. This program elevated the emotional connection between Meryl and Charlie and showcased the raw passion in their skating. There was something so breathtaking about how they threw themselves completely into the program and lived each note of the music.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates

Madison Chock and Evan Bates train in Novi, Michigan and are a relatively new team. They've been skating together for less than three years, but their chemistry was palpable right from the start. With their large height difference, they are able to perform stunning lifts, and I love how they're able to do both light-hearted and powerful, romantic programs well. My favorite program of theirs is their jazzy Chopin free dance from their first season together in 2011-2012. It was so different from anything I'd seen, and I love the playfulness and danciness of it.

Maia and Alex Shibutani

Maia and Alex Shibutani train alongside Meryl and Charlie in Canton, Michigan. I first saw this brother and sister duo at the junior level at the 2008 national championships. They already had people buzzing, and they quickly shot up the ranks and made a huge splash in their first year on the senior level, winning the bronze medal at worlds. It's been so fun watching them grow up into seasoned performers. I've always been so impressed with their technical precision and their musicality. Their elegant style was very much on display in their 2008-2009 Cinema Paradiso free dance, which is my favorite program of theirs.

I love all three of these teams so much and hope they have the time of their lives performing their Olympic programs!

Monday Moves

It's the amazing opening lift of Meryl Davis and Charlie White's Scheherazade free dance. The entrance, the positions... I'm living for everything about it!

Team Canton - Thanks for the Memories

On the heels of the shocking news that uber-successful ice dance coach Igor Shpilband was fired from the Arctic Edge rink in Canton, Michigan, I thought it appropriate to take a moment and reflect on the greatness that has been Team Canton for the past decade.

With the apparent split of Igor and his coaching partner Marina Zoueva, it appears Team Canton is in a state of flux. What remains to be seen is whether some of the teams will also leave the rink and follow Igor to his new home, wherever that will be. If there are defections, it will be a sad end to one of the most successful camps in figure skating and the current powerhouse in ice dancing.

Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto were the pioneers of Team Canton. After Igor and Marina moved to Canton from the Detroit Skating Club in 2003, they added even more teams to their stable of ice dancers, and Tanith and Ben were the leaders of the pack. They picked up their first national title in 2004 and then put American ice dancing back on the map with their silver medal at Worlds in 2005. It was their title-winning performance at 2005 Nationals that I'll always remember, though.

The 2006 Olympics brought Team Canton its first Olympic medal, a silver won by Tanith and Ben. I'll never forget the night of the Original Dance, when a record number of teams tripped and flopped all over the ice. Tanith and Ben were last to skate, and my heart was in my throat as I thought about all the disastrous skates that had preceded them. But they rose to the occasion and gave their best performance of their fiery Latin OD.

Tanith and Ben picked up two more World medals as members of Team Canton, but it was the young teams that started to make waves. In the fall of 2006, Meryl Davis and Charlie White were the first team to earn level fours on all of their elements in a free dance. And at 2007 Worlds, Davis/White and Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir both finished in the top seven, an unheard of result for two teams fresh out of juniors. Tessa and Scott blew me away with their Valse Triste free dance.

After Tanith and Ben left Team Canton in 2008, Davis/White and Virtue/Moir really stepped up and put themselves at the top of North American ice dancing. Meanwhile, the junior teams in the camp were having their own successes. In 2009, Madison Chock/Greg Zuerlein and Alex Shibutani/Maia Shibutani went 1-2 at Junior Worlds, showing just how deep the talent level in Canton was.

Then came 2010, the first of two banner years for Team Canton. Virtue/Moir earned the first Olympic gold medal in ice dance for North America, and Davis/White joined them on the podium with their silver. The teams and their coaches couldn't look any more joyous as they celebrated on the ice together.

Just when you thought they couldn't achieve any more firsts, Team Canton swept the podium at 2011 Worlds for the first North American sweep in ice dancing. Davis/White became the first American world champions in ice dance with their stunning and complex tango free dance. Every time I watch it, I marvel more at how intricate and difficult the program was.

Virtue/Moir picked up the silver medal, and the Shibutanis shocked everyone, including themselves, with the bronze. Their reaction when Igor told them they won a medal ("Don't have a heart attack.") is one of my favorite Kiss and Cry moments of all time.

Team Canton's success continued in 2012 with Virtue/Moir and Davis/White again finishing as the top two teams in the world. The camp seemed to be headed toward another year of victories in 2013, but with the firing of Igor, everything looks to be a muddled mess now. I just hope that all the teams can find the best situation for their personal and professional needs, and ice dancing in the U.S. can continue to thrive.

Celebrity Moms Interview!

Happy Mother's Day! I'm so pleased to introduce you to two very special moms - Cheryl Davis and Jacqui White. They are the proud mothers of Meryl Davis and Charlie White, 2011 World Champions and 2010 Olympic silver medalists in ice dancing.

I met Cheryl and Jacqui a few years ago at the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships, and I've had the great pleasure of spending time with them and getting to know them at competitions since then. In getting to know Cheryl and Jacqui, it's been easy to see how Meryl and Charlie have stayed grounded and become two of the best role models in the sport. Their moms are so down-to-earth and have such a positive outlook on skating and life.

Meryl and Charlie have skated together for fifteen years, and Cheryl and Jacqui have traveled to all of their competitions, so they've seen almost everything the sport has to offer. I could ask them an endless list of questions about all their experiences, but I kept it to five for this interview :)

1) Favorite international trip you've taken?

Cheryl:  It's hard to pick one place that's my favorite. We've been to so many great places. I think Venice was spectacular. It was so different from any other place we had visited and it was just for fun. Meryl and Charlie had already competed and they were not under any pressure. We loved the museums and the history. We took a mystery trip at night with a guided tour of the city. It was supposed to be scary and it was. We all laughed and had a great time. Romania, Vienna, and Paris were also great. I really have fond memories of every trip we've taken. I wish I could tell you about all of them. Every place we went had something special about it. Jacqui and I always made sure that Meryl and Charlie took some time to visit the cities and enjoy the culture. I can't say how much I loved Nice this last trip (for the 2012 World Championships). I can't wait to go back. Stunning.

Jacqui: It's difficult to choose just one international competition as my favorite because everywhere we went had its own charm for different reasons. I have wonderful memories of the little Japanese mountain town, Okaya, where Meryl and I were dressed up by friendly shop owners in traditional kimonos. I also loved the trip where we took a three-hour bus trip in Romania with the skaters to visit Dracula's Castle, and all the boys bought swords as souvenirs. But I think my favorite was Vienna. Vienna was Meryl and Charlie's first international competition when they were still novice level. At this event they had only one practice and one competition event, so we made good use of the extra time to go sight-seeing. Seth Chafetz was their coach at that time and he went everywhere with us, and believe me, we went everywhere and saw everything there was to see in Vienna. It was a wonderful initiation to competition travel for Cheryl and me and so much fun for Meryl and Charlie. You wouldn't believe some of the pictures.


2) Most memorable Meryl and Charlie costume disaster story?

Cheryl: I've only had a few disasters in costumes. We've started a few and then just quit when they weren't going well. One time, Meryl and I had to go to New York for a fitting. We talked with the designer and made a plan, but when we got there nothing had been started. We chose a design and set a date to go back the following week. We went back a week later, and the door was locked and no one was there. We sat at a Starbucks for a few hours and went back and tried again. A neighbor let us in the front door, and we went up to the office and knocked and knocked. A woman that didn't speak English came to the door. She didn't have anything for us to try on and the dressmaker wasn't in town. Again, no dress! Meryl said, "When you have lemons, make lemonade! Let's enjoy New York!" So we did. We spent the day running around seeing everything we could. We even took a walk through Central Park. We eventually went back another time and had a dress fitting, but then when the dresses were delivered, they didn't fit. One was so big and not what we wanted. It had to go back. Another one, when it finally fit, was beautiful. We never went back to New York for costumes, though. Too far and too much of a hassle. We like using our local seamstress. She's been sewing Meryl's costumes since she was nine.

Jacqui:  Luckily, Charlie hasn't had the costume disasters that Meryl has. I would say the only problems Charlie has had involved costumes that were ordered from new costume makers on recommendations from either the coaches or other skaters' parents. They never worked out, and some of the surprises we received when we saw what we ended up with were pretty funny (although not at the time). These costumes never even saw a practice; they just went directly into the "never to be used" closet. One of the best examples was the first attempt for the Eleanor Rigby costume. Charlie actually wore it once, and when his dad saw it, he said that Charlie would have to quit skating if he wore it again. That was the end of it - into the closet, never to be seen again! Thank goodness because it was an awful combination of Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Apprentice. 3) Favorite Meryl and Charlie program?

Cheryl: I think my favorite program was Samson and Delilah. I loved their costumes and the music. I felt it was meant for them. I always question the music at the beginning of the season, but Marina, Igor, Meryl, and Charlie know what they are doing. They always make something special out of whatever they choose. It hasn't always been easy, but when they've had to change music and rework their programs, they take it in stride. I'm proud of how they handle themselves even under stress!


Jacqui:  I have to go along with Cheryl on the choice for favorite program. I still absolutely love the Samson and Delilah program. Right from the beginning, Marina had a vision of what she wanted, and Meryl and Charlie really "got it." Igor and Marina worked as a team - Igor on the basic blocking of the choreography, and Marina took it from there and breathed life into it, continually tweaking right up to the last competition of the season. The only rough spot we ran into was trying to figure out what Charlie should wear. As usual, we brainstormed until we came up with what we thought was the perfect look to go along with Meryl's gorgeous gold dress.


4) Favorite performances from skaters other than Meryl and Charlie?


Cheryl:  When Meryl and Charlie were just starting senior, we saw Oksana Domnina skating in a beautiful yellow dress and dancing to a song with drums. She was amazing. Jacqui and I both looked at each other, wondering how little Meryl and Charlie could ever compete with Domnina and (Max) Shabalin. We've seen so many talented skaters over the years, it's hard to say.


Jacqui:  I really loved watching (Albena) Denkova and (Maxim) Staviski in all of their programs, but my favorite was their 2007 program at Worlds in Tokyo. They had such strength, speed and grace on the ice, and I liked that you could feel their relationship in their programs.

5) Any advice for other skating parents?


Cheryl:  My advice to parents is to enjoy the ride. It is stressful, but you have to remember there is very little you control. Take in every second of the time you spend with your child. Make the best of it! I wouldn't give back one second of the time I spent with Meryl on the road. I've also made wonderful friendships along the way. They've been such a great support system. One warning - don't forget your family and your other children along the way. Skating can take over your life if you let it. You really have to find a balance. Make sure you spend time doing other things. Family time is important!!!!

Jacqui:  My favorite advice for skating parents, taken from my years of experience as one of them, is to enjoy the journey because no one knows the destination or even if there will be one, at least in skating. I can remember reading something years ago that said, and I'm paraphrasing, if you can do everything you do, in the moment that you're doing it, the very best that you can, you don't have to look forward to a goal. You will reach it successfully, one moment at a time.

I think as parents of skaters, it's easy to get caught up in the stress and intensity and nervousness of the sport. So adopting a positive attitude for yourself and your skater is so important. Really try to enjoy your time with them and give them positive messages. I don't mean lie to them and tell them how great they are when they're having a hard time with something, but find ways to put a positive spin on things. Laugh with your skater and enjoy just talking to them and spending time with them. I guess these are things I would advise parents to do whether their child is a skater or not. I think it's just so important to try to create as many "happy time" moments with our kids that we can, and skating gives us as parents so many great opportunities to do that.
